What is AI color analysis?

AI color analysis is a way to find your color season from a single selfie. The software reads the undertone, depth and chroma of your skin, eyes and hair, matches that combination to one of the 12 seasons, and hands back the palette of shades that flatter you, plus the ones to keep away from your face.

What is AI color analysis?

How to take a selfie for AI color analysis

  1. 1Face a window in daylight, out of direct sun.
  2. 2Turn off beauty mode, filters and portrait effects.
  3. 3Remove makeup or keep it very light.
  4. 4Pull your hair back from your face.
  5. 5Wear white or grey near your face.
  6. 6Look straight at the camera with a relaxed expression.

What AI color analysis actually does

Classic color analysis is a person holding fabric drapes under your chin and watching what happens to your face. Some colors make skin look clear and rested; others bring out shadows, redness or a grey cast. After enough drapes, the analyst sees a pattern and names your season.

Color analysis AI does the same job by measurement. It looks at the actual pixel values of your skin, eyes and hair, works out where you sit on three scales, and finds the season whose palette fits those numbers. The output is the same thing a draping gives you: a season name, a set of flattering shades, and a list of colors that work against you.

The quality of that answer depends on two things: what the model learned from, and the photo you give it. Both get their own section below.

What AI color analysis actually does

How it compares to an in-person draping

An in-person draping with a trained analyst usually costs $150 to $400 and takes an hour or two. You see the effect of each color on your own face in real light, which is the biggest advantage of doing it in a studio. The result also depends on that one analyst's eye and on the lighting in that room on that day.

An AI color analysis costs a fraction of that, takes a few minutes, and gives the same reading every time you feed it the same photo. Its weak point is the photo itself: a dim, filtered or beautified selfie hands the model bad information.

What you get back

A good AI color analysis goes well past a season label. Expect your season out of 12, a palette of named shades you can shop for, specific lipstick and blush tones, the metals and neutrals that suit you, and an anti-palette of colors that wash you out.

Hex codes are a useful extra. They let you match a top online or check a lipstick swatch against your palette instead of guessing from a product photo.

What you get back

How color analysis AI works, step by step

  • You upload a selfie, ideally bare-faced in daylight.
  • The model finds your face and samples skin from several areas, plus your eyes and hair.
  • It corrects for the color of the light in the photo, so a warm lamp doesn't read as warm skin.
  • It scores your undertone (warm to cool), depth (light to deep) and chroma (soft to bright).
  • It matches those three scores to the closest of the 12 seasons.
  • It builds your palette, best shades and colors to avoid from that season and your exact position inside it.

How accurate is AI color analysis?

Accuracy comes down to training. A model that learned from a large set of real, expert-confirmed analyses has seen what Soft Autumn or Cool Summer looks like across thousands of faces, skin tones and lighting setups. Yuree's model was trained on 1M+ real expert color analyses and agrees with a $200+ in-studio reading 9 out of 10 times.

The rest comes down to the photo. Daylight, no filters and no heavy makeup will improve any tool's result more than anything else you can do.

Can ChatGPT do color analysis?

ChatGPT, Gemini and other general chatbots will attempt a color analysis if you upload a selfie and ask. The answer often sounds convincing. Ask again in a new chat and you may get a different season, because a general-purpose model has no fixed method for reading your coloring and reacts strongly to the lighting in each photo.

Treat a chatbot answer as a free first guess. A dedicated AI color analysis tool, trained on real analyses and built to give the same reading for the same photo, is the better choice when you plan to shop or change your makeup around the result.

How to get the most accurate result

  • Stand facing a window in daytime, out of direct sun.
  • Turn off beauty mode, filters and portrait effects in your camera.
  • Remove makeup, or keep it very light.
  • Pull your hair back so your face and hairline are visible, unless your hair is dyed far from its natural color.
  • Wear white or grey so no colored clothing reflects onto your skin.
  • Look straight at the camera with a relaxed face.

Quick answers

Common questions.

What is color analysis AI?+

Color analysis AI is software that finds your color season from a photo. It measures the undertone, depth and chroma of your skin, eyes and hair, matches them to one of the 12 seasons, and gives you a palette of flattering shades and colors to avoid.

Is AI color analysis accurate?+

It can be very accurate with a well-trained model and a good photo. Yuree's AI color analysis is trained on 1M+ real expert analyses and agrees with a $200+ in-studio reading 9 out of 10 times. Take your selfie in daylight with no filters for the best result.

Is there a free AI color analysis?+

Yuree's season quiz is free, and general chatbots like ChatGPT will attempt an analysis at no cost, though their answers can change between chats. A full AI color analysis with your exact palette, makeup shades and colors to avoid costs $19 on Yuree.

Is AI color analysis better than an in-person draping?+

Each has strengths. An in-person draping lets you see colors on your face in real light, and costs $150 to $400. AI color analysis is faster, far cheaper and consistent from one reading to the next, as long as your photo is taken in good daylight.
