Light Spring asks for light, warm, and fresh at once, and Hilary has been demonstrating all three since she was thirteen. Her values never leave the light register, golden blonde against light warm skin against pale aqua eyes is a face with almost no built-in contrast, which means the palette has to stay quiet or it starts shouting over her. Her warmth is genuine rather than applied: the gold in her hair, the honey in her tan, the peach in her cheek all pull the same direction. And there is a freshness, a clarity, to her colouring that dusty, greyed shades flatten. Tints with sun in them do the work: coral blush, soft buttercup, spring mint, powder sky, warm apricot, cream instead of white. Put her in a pale butter-yellow slip or a soft coral and the whole face lifts, the eyes go greener, the skin looks lit from inside. Warm gold jewellery belongs on her; icy silver sits on top of her like frost.

Light Summer is the tempting mislabel, because light and soft she certainly is. But Light Summer is cool, ash hair, rose-mauve flush, grey-blue eyes, and Hilary fails every one of those checks. Her blonde is butter and gold, never ash; her flush is peach; and her blue-green eyes carry a warm ring, not a grey haze. Cool powder pink and ash lavender drain her tan to sallow, while the same lightness warmed to coral and buttercup restores the glow, warmth is the deciding vote, and hers is warm. True Spring is the pull from the other side, and it fails on volume rather than temperature. True Spring runs brighter and more saturated, poppy red, hot marigold, electric turquoise, and colours at that intensity out-shout her low-contrast face; the dress wins and Hilary disappears behind it. She needs Spring's warmth turned down to a whisper: warm and light, not cool and light, and not warm and loud.
