Soft Summer runs cool-leaning, muted, and medium in depth, and Diane fits it on the two axes that decide the call, muting and depth, while sitting at the neutral edge of the temperature axis rather than the icy one. That neutrality is precisely what makes her a Soft Summer instead of a Cool Summer: the season's whole function is to absorb faces whose warmth and coolness cancel each other out into grey. Her hazel-green eyes already do this on their own, and a foggy blue or a smoke plum simply extends it outward. Depth is the other half of the case. The season she gets mistaken for is Soft Autumn, and the mistake is understandable, she is muted, medium, and brunette, and her skin tans. Three shared traits. But Soft Autumn's muting is warm muting, and it asks for shades with a soil base: moss, camel, terracotta, olive gold. Put those on Diane and the olive in her own skin doubles up instead of contrasting, so her face goes sallow and her under-eyes sink; the green in her eyes dulls out to plain brown. Her hair is the harder evidence. It grows ash at the root with almost no red or copper coming through, and a Soft Autumn palette has no use for ash. Cool Summer is the other candidate, and it fails on saturation rather than on temperature. Cool Summer wants clear, cleanly cool blues and true cool berry, and clarity is what her face cannot metabolise, a fully cool clean blue hardens the line of her jaw and makes her skin look powdered rather than lit. She needs the temperature pulled back to neutral and the chroma pulled down until the colour looks slightly weathered. Muted first, cool-neutral second, medium in weight. That is Soft Summer, arriving from the warm side of the door.
