Deep Winter asks for two things, depth and coolness, and Bellucci has spent forty years on red carpets demonstrating both. The depth is obvious: black lace, black velvet, black Dolce & Gabbana column after column, and not once has black worn her. That is the Deep Winter tell, because jet black is the single most demanding color in the wardrobe, it needs hair dark enough to answer it and contrast wide enough to hold it, and she has both. But depth alone would make her a Deep Autumn, and this is where the coolness decides it: her best non-black moments are all jewel tones with blue in their blood. The dark wine gown she wore to the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premiere reads as a continuation of her own coloring, burgundy is essentially her hair translated into fabric. Deep teal-sapphire velvet does the same job in blue, and a saturated magenta satin sharpens her face instead of shouting over it, because a color that deep and that cool is speaking her native volume. Pure white, icy grey, and true red complete the set. Silver and white diamonds at the ear; warm yellow gold is the one metal that argues with her.

Deep Autumn is the near-miss everyone reaches for, and the logic is understandable, she is Italian, olive-skinned, dark-eyed, and depth is not in question. But Deep Autumn is depth plus warmth, and warmth is exactly what her coloring refuses to supply. Put her in the earth register, tan, camel, chocolate, honey gold, and watch what happens: the olive in her skin picks up the yellow in the fabric and turns sallow, the shadows under her eyes deepen, and the highest-contrast face on the carpet suddenly reads tired. Her bronze and gold sequin appearances at Cannes make the case better than any theory, the dress glitters and her face dims, because every point of light in the fabric is warmer than she is. The other test is the metals: warm gold jewellery sits on her like set dressing, while silver and platinum vanish into the skin, and that is a cool answer, not a warm one. She is not a Cool Winter either, her olive depth is too heavy for the icy pastel end of that palette. Deep and cool, never deep and warm: that is the entire verdict.
