What is a color drape test?

A color drape test is the core technique of color analysis: fabric swatches in different colors are held against the face under neutral light to see which ones make the skin look even and lit, and which make it look tired or sallow.

Color drape test

Draping isolates the effect of color. A flattering drape erases shadows, evens the skin, and brightens the eyes; an unflattering one adds grey, emphasizes lines, or yellows the skin. Analysts compare drapes in pairs (warm vs cool, light vs deep) to triangulate the season.

AI color analysis does the same comparison digitally — measuring how the skin reads against simulated drapes from a single photo, with no salon visit required.

Frequently asked

Can I do a color drape test at home?
You can approximate it with fabric in neutral daylight and no makeup, but lighting and self-perception make it unreliable. A controlled studio session or an AI analysis gives a far more consistent result.
What colors are used in draping?
Analysts use sets of color drapes that contrast warm vs cool, light vs deep, and soft vs bright, comparing them in pairs to triangulate which season makes the skin look most even.
