Light olive skin.
Fair enough to get called pale, olive enough to look grey in pink makeup. How to tell if that's you, and what to wear instead.

What is light olive skin?
Light olive skin is a fair to light complexion with a green or green-gold cast under the surface. It looks beige rather than pink or peach, can read slightly sallow or grey in cool light, and tans easily without much burning. Pink-based foundations and pale pink makeup tend to make it look ashy.
That's olive skin in general. Which olive are you?

Why light olive skin is easy to miss
Most people picture olive skin as medium or tan, so light olive usually gets filed as fair, pale or just "sallow." The olive cast is still there, it's simply quieter. You see it as a beige or slightly green tone where fair skin would look pink, and as a grey cast when you wear the wrong colors near your face.
That's why light olive is the hardest version of olive to shop for. Light foundation ranges lean pink, pale makeup leans pink, and almost every "fair skin" guide assumes a rosy base you don't have.
Light olive vs fair, pale and medium olive
The two things to compare are depth (how light or dark) and cast (what color sits underneath).
| Depth | Cast | Tells | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fair or pale (not olive) | Very light | Pink, rosy or peachy | Burns before it tans, flushes pink |
| Fair or pale olive | Very light | Beige with a faint green | Looks grey in pink foundation, tans to a golden beige |
| Light olive | Light | Clear green-gold | Tans easily, looks yellow-green in photos |
| Light-medium olive | Light to medium | Green-gold, more golden | Tans deep quickly, rarely burns |
| Medium olive | Medium | Green-gold or ashy | Reads olive to most people at a glance |
Fair olive, pale olive and light olive are the same skin type at slightly different depths. Everything on this page applies to all three.
How to tell if you have light olive skin
- 1
Look at bare skin in daylight
Stand by a window with no makeup and look at your jaw and neck. If the skin reads beige, khaki or faintly green rather than pink or peach, the olive cast is there.
- 2
Remember your last pink foundation
If light pink or rosy shades always made your face look grey or chalky next to your neck, that's the classic light olive tell.
- 3
Check how you tan
Light olive skin usually tans within a few days and rarely burns badly. Fair skin with a pink base tends to burn first.
- 4
Hold white and cream to your face
Stark white often makes light olive skin look sallow, while cream or soft ivory looks clean. If cream wins, you're probably olive.

Foundation for light and pale olive skin
This is where light olive struggles most. The lighter a range gets, the pinker it tends to be, and a light pink base on olive skin turns into a grey mask. Shop by the undertone letter first: olive (O) if the brand has it, neutral (N) if not, and skip anything marked C, R or P.
If a shade matches your depth but still reads slightly rosy, a drop of an olive or green mixing adjuster pulls it back toward your cast. Swatch on your jaw, not your wrist, and judge it in daylight after ten minutes.
Light olive foundation shades to swatch first
Shades the brands themselves describe as light with an olive undertone.
- Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Foundation
- 190 (light, olive)
- One of the few true olive shades at the light end of a mainstream range.
- Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Foundation
- 130 and 145 (light, warm olive)
- Best for light olive with a golden lean. Cool light olive may find them a touch warm.
- MAC Studio Fix Fluid
- The lightest NC shades
- Not olive-specific, but NC is MAC's yellow-based line, so it avoids the pink problem.

Hair colors for light olive skin
Light olive skin looks best with hair that has some depth and a clean, not brassy, tone. Dark brunette, chocolate and soft espresso give the most contrast and make the skin look clear. Light brown and bronde work when they're kept neutral to slightly golden.
The two that most often go wrong are icy platinum, which leaves light olive skin looking grey, and orange-gold blonde, which brings out the yellow in it. If you want to go lighter, keep a darker root and choose a beige or honey blonde over ash or brass.

Common questions
Is light olive skin the same as pale olive or fair olive skin?
Close enough to shop the same way. Fair, pale and light olive are all light complexions with a green-gold cast; fair and pale are just a little lighter. The same foundation undertones and makeup shades work across all three.
What foundation shade is best for light olive skin?
Start with a brand's lightest olive (O) shade, then its lightest neutral (N). Haus Labs Triclone 190 and Fenty Pro Filt'r 130 and 145 are described as light olive. Avoid C, R or P shades, which turn grey on olive skin.
What blush suits light olive skin?
Soft peach, apricot and warm rose for warm light olive, and a cool rose or soft berry for cool light olive. Skip pale baby pink, which sits on top of the olive cast and looks chalky.
What hair color looks best on light olive skin?
Dark brunette, chocolate and neutral light brown are the safest. If you go blonde, choose a beige or honey blonde with a darker root, and avoid icy platinum and brassy orange-gold.
Can you have light olive skin and blue or green eyes?
Yes. Eye color doesn't decide skin tone. Light olive skin often comes with hazel or green eyes, and blue or grey eyes over olive skin, like Adriana Lima's, make for an especially striking contrast.
