Why you never fit warm or cool, what the green in your skin actually is, and how to tell which kind of olive you are.

What is an olive undertone?
An olive undertone is a green or green-gold cast under the skin that sits alongside a warm or cool base. It's why olive skin doesn't match pink or peachy foundations, looks grey in pastels and tans easily. Olive isn't a fourth temperature: most olive skin is warm olive or cool olive.
That's olive skin in general. Which olive are you?
Fifteen quick picks tell you whether you're warm, cool or soft olive, and your season. Free, no photo.
Olive is a cast, not a temperature
Undertone guides usually give you three boxes: warm, cool and neutral. Olive skin never fits any of them cleanly, because olive describes a green tint layered on top of the temperature, not the temperature itself.
Underneath the green, every olive complexion still leans warm or cool. Of the 16 olive-skinned celebrities we've analyzed, 10 land in warm Autumn seasons and 6 in cool Winter seasons. So the useful question isn't "am I olive or warm?" It's "am I warm olive or cool olive?"
Olive vs warm, cool and neutral undertones
What each undertone looks like on bare skin, and how it behaves.
| Undertone | Bare skin looks | Veins on the wrist | Pink foundation looks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cool | Pink, rosy or blue-ish | Blue or purple | Natural |
| Warm | Peachy, golden or yellow | Green | Too pink |
| Neutral | Beige, no clear lean | Blue-green, hard to call | Fine if subtle |
| Olive | Green, khaki or grey-beige | Green or blue-green | Grey and ashy |
Green veins alone don't prove olive skin: warm undertones show green veins too. The foundation test is the more reliable one.
How to tell if you have olive undertones
Do these in daylight with a clean face. Two or three yeses usually mean olive.
- 1
The foundation test
If both pink and golden-peach foundations have looked wrong on you, pink turning grey and golden turning orange, that's the strongest sign of an olive undertone.
- 2
The pastel test
Hold a pale pink or baby blue top under your face. Olive skin tends to look sallow or greenish next to soft pastels.
- 3
The white vs cream test
Stark white can make olive skin look yellow-green, and cream often looks cleaner. On cool pink skin, white usually wins.
- 4
The vein test
Look at the veins on your inner wrist. Green or blue-green veins point warm or olive. Clearly blue or purple veins point cool, though cool olive skin can still show them.
- 5
The tan test
Olive skin usually tans easily and rarely burns, and in winter can fade to a greyish beige instead of pink.
The three kinds of olive undertone
Once you know you're olive, the temperature underneath decides your colors.
| Warm olive | Cool olive | Neutral (soft) olive | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Looks | Golden-green, glows in warm light | Ashy green-beige, can look grey | Muted beige-green, no strong lean |
| Jewelry | Gold | Silver | Rose gold or both |
| Usual seasons | Deep or Warm Autumn | Deep or Clear Winter | Soft Autumn |
| Celebrity examples | Penélope Cruz, Selena Gomez | Gal Gadot, Aubrey Plaza | Kaia Gerber |

Is a green undertone normal?
Yes. A green undertone is simply another way of saying olive. It comes from a mix of yellow pigment and the slightly blue cast of veins under the skin, and it's common in people with Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Latin American, South Asian and East Asian heritage, though anyone can have it.
It can look stronger when you're tired, in winter when a tan fades, or under fluorescent light. None of that means the undertone changed. The cast stays, only how visible it is shifts.

Common questions
Is olive undertone warm or cool?
Neither on its own. Olive is a green cast that sits over a warm or cool base. Most olive skin is warm olive, but cool olive is common too: in our analyses of 16 olive-skinned celebrities, 10 were warm and 6 were cool.
What is the difference between olive and neutral undertones?
Neutral skin has no clear lean and looks beige. Olive skin has a visible green or khaki cast, which is why neutral foundations can still look slightly pink on it. Soft olive sits between the two.
What is the difference between olive and warm undertones?
Warm skin looks peachy or golden, and golden-peach foundations suit it. Olive skin adds green, so the same golden-peach shades often turn orange on it. Warm olive needs yellow-olive bases instead.
Do green veins mean olive undertones?
Not by themselves. Green veins show up on both warm and olive skin. Use the vein test alongside the foundation and pastel tests for a clearer answer.
What foundation is best for olive undertones?
Shades labeled olive (O) first, then neutral (N). Warm olive can also wear yellow-based warm shades. Skip pink, rosy and cool shades (C, R or P), which turn olive skin grey.
Can dark skin have olive undertones?
Yes. Olive undertones show up at every depth, from fair to deep. On deeper skin the cast often reads as a cool, slightly green-brown, and olive or neutral foundation shades are usually the closest match.
