Deep olive skin.

Rich, golden-green and often mistaken for tan or brown. How to tell if that's you, and the shades that make it glow.

What is deep olive skin?

Deep olive skin is a medium-deep to dark complexion with a green or green-gold cast under the surface. It reads golden-brown in sun and slightly ashy or khaki in cool light, tans deeply and rarely burns. Red or orange-based foundations look muddy on it, and it suits rich, saturated colors far better than pastels.

Why deep olive gets mislabeled

The deeper olive skin gets, the more the green cast hides under the depth. Most people, and most foundation ranges, call deep olive skin tan, brown or simply warm. The olive only shows up when something goes wrong: a foundation that looks orange or ashy, a red lipstick that turns muddy, a camel coat that makes the skin look grey-green.

Deep olive and dark olive mean the same thing. Both describe olive skin at the deep end of the range, roughly from a deep tan to a rich golden brown.

How to tell if you have deep olive skin

  1. 1

Look at your skin in the shade

In direct sun deep olive looks golden-brown. In shade or overcast light, look at your jaw and inner arm: a khaki, greenish or slightly grey tone is the olive cast.

  2. 2

    Think about your foundation history

If deep golden shades always looked orange and deep red-based shades looked ashy, the missing piece is the green. That's the deep olive tell.

  3. 3

Try camel and mustard near your face

On deep olive skin, camel and mustard often make the skin look dull and greenish. On golden tan skin, they usually look great.

Foundation for deep olive skin

Deep ranges tend to split into red-based and golden-orange shades, and deep olive needs a third option: a neutral or olive base with a yellow-green lean. Look for the letter O or N on the shade code, or descriptions like "deep with olive undertones" or "deep neutral olive."

If a deep shade matches your depth but looks orange, mix in a drop of olive or green adjuster. If it looks grey or ashy, it's probably too red for you. Swatch on the jaw and check in daylight after ten minutes, once the oxidation has settled.

Hair colors for deep olive skin

Deep olive skin looks best with hair at least as dark as a deep chestnut. Espresso, soft black and dark chocolate are the natural partners. Warm deep olive glows with caramel or mahogany ribbons through a dark base; cool deep olive suits blue-black and burgundy-black.

Light blondes are the hardest shade for deep olive skin. The gap between the hair and the skin is so large that the skin looks darker and greener than it is. If you want light, keep it to caramel or honey balayage around the face.
