What makeup colors suit olive skin?

Olive skin suits makeup with warmth and depth: terracotta or apricot blush, bronze and olive eyeshadow, and brick, wine or berry lips. Warm olive looks best in copper and brick, cool olive in plum and deep red, and soft olive in dusty rose and warm taupe. Frosty pinks and chalky pale nudes turn olive skin grey.

That's olive skin in general. Which olive are you?

Fifteen quick picks tell you whether you're warm, cool or soft olive, and your season. Free, no photo.

Why makeup reads differently on olive skin

The green-gold cast in olive skin changes how color sits on it. Light, milky pinks mix with that cast and go grey. Bright oranges pile onto the yellow and look muddy. What works is color with enough depth to stand apart from the skin: warm brick instead of coral, berry instead of baby pink, bronze instead of frosted champagne.

Which direction that depth goes depends on your undertone. Warm olive wants golden depth, cool olive wants blue-based depth, and soft olive wants everything slightly muted. The map below gives you each version side by side.

The nude lipstick problem

Most nudes are designed around pink or peach skin, so on olive they read as concealer on the lips. The fix is to go deeper and browner than feels natural: a nude one or two shades darker than your lips, with a caramel or rosy-brown base, not a beige one.

Warm olive: caramel and peachy-brown nudes. Cool olive: a rosy-brown or a sheer berry, which reads more natural on you than any beige. Soft olive: a warm, muted nude with a touch of rose.

Bronzer and contour without the orange

Bronzer is where olive skin goes orange fastest. Pick one with a brown or olive base rather than red or orange, and keep it no more than two shades deeper than your skin.

For contour, a cool taupe works on nearly every olive because it mimics a real shadow. Warm olive can use a soft brown instead. Skip grey-heavy contour on light olive, which already leans ashy.

Common questions

  • What color blush is best for olive skin?

Apricot, peach or terracotta for warm olive, cool berry or raspberry for cool olive, and dusty peach or warm rose for soft olive. Avoid pale baby pink, which turns grey on olive skin.

  • What lipstick suits olive skin?

Brick, mulled wine and caramel nudes suit warm olive. Deep red, wine and plum suit cool olive. Soft terracotta and dusty rose suit soft olive. Skip very pale, chalky nudes.

  • What eyeshadow looks best on olive skin?

Bronze, copper, olive and warm brown for warm olive. Charcoal, plum, cool taupe and pine for cool olive. Soft gold, camel and warm taupe for soft olive.

  • Should olive skin wear bronzer?

Yes, as long as it's brown or olive based rather than orange or red, and no more than two shades deeper than your skin. Cool olive usually looks better with a cool taupe for contour instead.

  • Can olive skin wear pink makeup?

Deeper pinks, yes: berry, raspberry and rose work well. Pale, milky or frosted pinks are the ones that grey olive skin out.
