Why some lipsticks look grey on olive skin

Olive skin has a green-gold cast. A lipstick that's pale, chalky or full of white pigment sits on top of that cast and picks up its grey, so the lips look washed out and the face looks tired. That's the beige nude problem, and it's the most common lipstick mistake on olive skin.

Shades with real pigment and a little warmth or a clear blue base do the opposite. They stand apart from the skin, so the mouth reads as color and the olive reads as a glow. Your undertone picks which family: warm olive looks best in browns, bricks and warm reds, and cool olive in berries, wines and blue-reds.

Nude lipstick for olive skin

A nude should look like your lips, slightly better. On olive skin that means a shade one or two steps deeper than your natural lip color, with a pink-brown or caramel base. The beige and peach nudes sold as universal are usually built for fair, pink-based skin, and on olive they read as concealer.

Warm olive looks best in caramel, toffee and peachy-brown nudes. Cool olive looks best in rosewood and mauve-brown nudes. If a nude looks right in the tube but grey on your mouth, line your lips one shade deeper and press the nude on top.

Red lipstick for olive skin

Red is one of the most flattering lip colors for olive skin, as long as its temperature matches yours. Warm olive suits brick, tomato-brown and warm reds with a hint of orange. Cool olive suits blue-reds and deep cherry, the classic Hollywood red.

If you're unsure, a deep, true red that leans neither orange nor pink sits in the middle and suits most olive skin. Soft olive does best with a muted brick red worn sheer or blotted.

How to test a lipstick on olive skin

  1. 1

    Swatch on your fingertip

The pad of your finger is closer to your lip color than the back of your hand, so a swatch there shows how the shade will actually look.

  2. 2

    Check it in daylight

Store lighting is warm and flattering. Step near a window: a shade that turns grey or chalky there will do the same all day.

  3. 3

    Look at your whole face

A good lipstick makes your skin look clearer and your eyes brighter. If the first thing you notice is the lipstick, or your skin suddenly looks sallow, it's the wrong shade.
