Foundation for olive skin.
Why every foundation turns pink or orange on you, and how to read a shade code so the next bottle doesn't.

What foundation is best for olive skin?
Choose a shade labeled olive (O) or neutral (N) with a yellow-green base, not a pink (C or R) or golden-orange (W) one. Olive skin has a green-gold cast, so pink bases look ashy and orange bases leave a line at the jaw. Match the undertone letter first, then the depth, and check it on your jaw in daylight after ten minutes.
That's olive skin in general. Which olive are you?

Why foundation goes wrong on olive skin
Most foundation ranges are built on one axis: pink at one end, golden at the other. Olive skin sits off that axis entirely. It has a green-gold cast that neither end of the range accounts for, so you end up choosing between two wrong answers.
A pink or rosy base sits on top of the green and cancels it into grey. That's the flat, slightly ashy mask look, the one where your face and neck look like they belong to different people. A strongly golden or peachy base goes the other way: it adds orange to a skin that already has yellow in it, and you get a tan line at the jaw by lunchtime.
The fix isn't a lighter or darker shade. It's a different undertone. Once you shop by the undertone letter first and the depth number second, the pink-or-orange problem mostly disappears.
How to read a shade code
Most brands put a letter next to the depth number. It's the most useful thing on the bottle.
| Letter | What it means | On olive skin |
|---|---|---|
| C, R or P | Cool, rosy or pink base | Turns grey and ashy. Skip these. |
| N | Neutral, balanced base | Often the closest match in ranges with no olive shades. |
| W, G or Y | Warm, golden or yellow base | Works on warm olive with depth. Goes orange on cool or light olive. |
| O | Olive, yellow-green base | Built for you. Start here whenever a range has it. |
| NC (at MAC) | Yellow-golden, despite the name | The least pink option in MAC's range. |
| NW (at MAC) | Pinker, despite the name | Usually too rosy for olive skin. |
Letters vary by brand, and a few reverse them. When in doubt, read the brand's own description of the shade.
Find your shade in four steps
- 1
Work out which olive you are
Hold gold jewelry to your bare face in daylight, then silver. If gold blends in, you're warm olive. If silver does, you're cool olive. If neither stands out, you're soft olive.
- 2
Pick the undertone letter
Warm olive: O first, then W with a yellow (not peach) base. Cool olive: O first, then N. Soft olive: O or N, never strongly golden.
- 3
Swatch three shades on your jaw
Not your wrist or the back of your hand, which are usually a different color from your face. Draw three stripes from cheek to jaw, one shade lighter, one matching, one deeper.
- 4
Judge it in daylight after ten minutes
Foundation oxidizes and often darkens or warms as it sets. The right stripe is the one that disappears at the jawline after ten minutes by a window.

Light olive skin is the hardest match
The lighter the range, the pinker it tends to get. Light and fair olive skin is where the grey mask shows most, because a light pink base has nothing to hide behind.
Start with the lightest O shade a brand makes, and if it's still too pink, try its lightest N. If a shade matches in depth but reads slightly rosy, a drop of an olive or green mixing adjuster pulls it back toward your cast without changing the depth.

Concealer and powder
Keep your concealer in the same undertone family as your foundation, one shade lighter at most. An olive foundation under a pink concealer brings the grey right back under your eyes.
For setting, use a translucent or yellow-toned powder. White and pink powders can flash grey on olive skin, especially in photos.

Common questions
What foundation undertone is best for olive skin?
Olive (O) first. If the range has no olive shades, go neutral (N). Warm olive can also wear a yellow-based warm (W) shade; cool and light olive usually can't.
Why does foundation look orange on my olive skin?
The shade is too golden or peachy. Olive skin already has yellow in it, so a strongly warm base adds orange on top. Move to an olive or neutral shade at the same depth.
Why does foundation look grey or ashy on olive skin?
The shade has a pink or rosy base, which cancels the green in olive skin into grey. Switch to an olive or neutral undertone rather than going lighter or darker.
Is MAC NC or NW better for olive skin?
NC. Despite the name, NC is MAC's yellow-golden line and NW is the pinker one, so NC is usually the closer match for olive skin.
How do I find foundation for light olive skin?
Start with a brand's lightest olive shade, then its lightest neutral. Light ranges skew pink, so avoid anything labeled C, R or P, and use an olive mixing drop if a shade matches in depth but reads rosy.
